Directory of Privacy Impact Assessments
The Government of Alberta is committed to conducting privacy impact reviews when developing new or enhanced systems and processes that involve the management of personal information. The review may take one of two forms, the first being a full Privacy Impact Assessment, or PIA. It is a due diligence exercise, in which we identify and address potential risks to individual privacy that may occur in the course of our operations. A PIA provides a consistent format and structured process:
- to identify privacy issues that could arise from the collection and handling of personal information;
- to determine how the project will affect the privacy of individuals who are the subject of the information; and,
- to consider measures required to mitigate or eliminate any such impacts.
A completed PIA documents assurance to the business area sponsor and senior management in the Government of Alberta, the Information and Privacy Commissioner, and to the public that privacy requirements have been identified and satisfied in a timely and cost efficient manner.
When a review of the project indicates it has limited scope, and there are no significant privacy impacts, there is a decreased need for a formal PIA. A Privacy Scan (PS) is a report of the review. For example, a PS could be used where a new process is created but the use of personal information is minimal.
For further information on privacy reviews, contact a Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Coordinator.
